In order to conduct business in the Middle East, it is critical to know the calendar. Familiarity with Muslim celebrations will help to avoid doing business at inconvenient times and provide important cultural information. Below is an introductory guide to some of the major Muslim religious practices.
Ramadan is a monthlong religious observance of self-reflection and discipline. During the holiday, Muslims fast throughout the daytime and mark each evening with a festive meal. Immediately following Ramadan is Eid ul-Fitr (Festival of Fast-Breaking), lasting three days. Eid al-Adha, also a three-day festival, comes at the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Business is not ordinarily conducted during these holidays.
Fridays are the most important prayer days of the week. Many Muslim men attend prayer services, devoting the day to religious themes. Fridays in Muslim countries should not be considered working days.
